Natural Disasters
Everything you wanted to know about earth
science
| Project
Scenario: |
|
Our school is going to have a Science Fair. The fifth grade classes
will prepare for our role as "scientists
in the making" by designing and creating original science fair projects. In order to do this, we must not only understand the
scientific method but be able to complete lab reports using this method.
To be better prepared to construct our awesome projects, we will
study the water cycle, the basics of plate tectonics, weathering and
erosion, and force and friction. We will learn about these
things while exploring the causes of natural disasters. |
|
Tools and Resources:
|
|
We will make use of the many fine books in our Media Center, plus books
checked out from your local library. We will use the Technology Center to
access the informational online links provided below. We will view videos
from Discovery School on different types of disasters. |
Activities:
|
| 1. Students will
complete science units on Inertia, Seasons, Living Things, and the Water
Cycle. (Tom Snyder Science Court Units) |
2. After
presenting the project overview, students will use the links provided on
the school website to complete their web based field trips. They will be
given report sheets to demonstrate their learning. |
3. After acquiring
general information on the earth and weather, students will
form groups of four. Each group will be assigned a specific "natural
disaster" topic. These topics include hurricanes, tornadoes,
earthquakes, volcanoes, tsunamis, and floods.
|
| 4. All students will be expected to
complete question sheets by using the website links provided. Each student
will demonstrate correct use of word processing skills to complete a one
page report on a given facet of their research. |
| 5. Student teams will read print
material and
use the websites provided to gain information on their assigned topics. |
6. Student teams will produce a visual project to demonstrate their learning in regards
their particular topic. They will present their learning to their
classmates and invited guests. They will produce an evaluation for their
classmates.
|
| 7. Students
will design and create a science fair project that demonstrates their understanding
of
the 5th grade science curriculum. |
| 8. Students
will follow Science Fair procedures to present their creative
projects. |
Project Sharing:
 |
You will complete your Natural Disaster's project. You will present
your learning and project to your classmates and guests. During the presentation
each team member will be expected to explain their specific area of
expertise. You will prepare a crossword puzzle, gameboard, game show
simulation, or some other form of evaluation for your classmates. |
