The Rainforest

Project Scenario: The fifth grade has been asked to create a rainforest museum in our multi-purpose room. We are going to design and create a virtual talking rainforest.  In order to do this, we must have an in depth understanding of the rainforest biome.  To be prepared to construct our awesome project, we will study the Maya, plants and animals,  locations and layers, and  problems and dangers of the rainforests.
Tools and Resources:
We will make use of the many fine books in our Media Center, plus books checked out from our local libraries. We will use the Mini Lab and Room 100 to access the informational online links provided below. We will view videos on rainforests.
Activities:
1. Students will complete The Second Voyage of the Mimi-The Maya (Bank Street College Project In Science and Mathematics)
2. The fifth grade classes will travel to Brookfield Zoo to visit their virtual rainforest exhibit.
2. After presenting the project overview, students will use the links provided on the school website to complete their web based field trips. They will be given report sheets to demonstrate their learning.
3. After acquiring general information on tropical rainforest biomes, students will be given a person, animal, or plant to research in depth. They will become part of the talking rainforest. All students will be expected to complete a question sheet by using the website links provided.
4. In math, student groups will be given specific data relating to the rainforest. They will construct projection graphs and form conclusions after analyzing the projected data.
5. In language arts, student groups will write original poems and/or song lyrics about a rainforest plant, animal, or issue.
6. Student teams will produce a visual poster. These posters may inform about any of the following: rainforest products, medicinal uses of plants, greenhouse effect, slash and burn farming, types of rainforests, locations of rainforests, facts about rainforests, housing, etc. These informational posters will be presented to their classmates and displayed in the multi-purpose room.
7. Students will design and create a rainforest, plus dress appropriately for their roles in their virtual talking rainforest.
