Super
Science

An Awesome Invention Unit
| Project
Scenario: |
|
Our school is going to have a Science Expo. The fourth grade classes
will prepare for our role as "scientists
in the making" by designing and creating original
inventions or other science fair projects. In order to do this, we must not only understand the
scientific method but be able to complete lab reports using this method.
To be better prepared to construct our awesome projects, we will
study simple machines, flight, sound, heat, and light. |
Tools and Resources:
|
|
We will make use of the many fine books in our Media Center, plus books
checked out from your local library. Informational website
links are provided below. We will do experiments in our classrooms
too. |
Activities:
|
| 1. After
presenting the project overview, students will use the links provided on
the school website to complete their web based field trips and review
reports. |
| 2. Students will
form groups of four to complete the Work and Simple Machines interactive science
unit (Tom Snyder). |
| 3. Student groups will perform
experiments directed towards the science concepts presented in the Simple
Machines unit. They will complete lab reports. Students will perform
experiments in their classrooms related to the 4th grade science
curriculum. |
| 4. Student pairs will read print
material and
use the websites provided to gain information on their assigned
inventors/inventions. |
| 5. Student pairs
will produce a visual project to demonstrate their learning in regards
their inventor/invention. |
| 6. Students
will design and create an invention or other science project that incorporates the use of at least
one simple machine or demonstrates their understanding of another facet of
the 4th grade science curriculum. |
| 7. Students
will follow Science Expo procedures to present their creative
projects. |
Project Sharing:
 |
You will complete your "Creator's Cosmic Closet" on a
hanger. You will present
your inventor/invention to all your classmates in the fifth grade. During the presentation you will be expected to explain your specific topic of
expertise. Later you will present your actual project to your classmates, parents, and
guests. |
